Vote!
What happens when you arrive
- You give your name and show your ID.
- A worker checks you in.
- You get your ballot and a private booth.
- You mark your choices. Ask a worker if anything is confusing — that is their job.
- You cast your ballot. Done!
You cannot “do it wrong.” If you make a mistake on a paper ballot, you can ask for a new one. Skipping a race is fine.
Voting by mail?
Follow the instructions in your ballot packet, and return it on time. You can track your mail ballot on the Texas Secretary of State website.
For in-person voters: once the machine accepts your ballot, it is counted.

⚠ Watch out — common mistakes
- A problem does not mean go home. If your name is not on the list, or there is an ID issue, ask for a provisional ballot — a way to vote while it gets sorted out.
- In line at closing time? Stay in line — you can still vote.
- Mail-in voters: sign the envelope and write your ID number (driver license number, or last 4 of your Social Security number) where asked. A missing ID number is the top reason Texas rejects mail ballots. Follow the instructions exactly and return it on time.
