Which county do you live in?

Texas is split into big areas called counties. Think of a county as the office that handles your voting paperwork — like the post office that serves your street. You do not choose it. Your home address decides it.

The Austin area covers more than one county. Central Austin is in Travis County. Some north parts are in Williamson County. Some southwest parts are in Hays County. Nearby areas can be in Bastrop or Caldwell County.

Find your county

Live within about 10 miles of downtown Austin? Then you are almost certainly in Travis County. Farther out, use the box below to be sure.

Remember it. Once you know your county, please write or memorize it. You will need it on the next pages. This website does not save it for you.

Why it matters: your county runs your elections. It is where you register, and it decides where you vote. So we need to know it first.

⚠ Watch out — common mistakes

Do not guess from your mail. An “Austin, TX” address can be outside the city, and even in another county. Use the box above.
Use your home address — the place you actually live — not a post-office box, a mailbox store, or your work address.
Near the edges, always check. More than 10 miles from downtown, do not assume Travis — look it up.
Getting the county wrong breaks everything (registration, ballot, and polling place all depend on it). Get it right here.
Write or memorize your county. This website will not remember it for you, and you will need it on the next pages.
